THE 21st CENTURY SINGER - One Day Technique Intensive - All Levels

This practical course explores the latest research on postural stability, respiration and vocal anatomy/physiology, basic acoustics and aural diagnostic skills.  The focus is on how these concepts are applied to singing and singing teaching and all participants will use these tools in singing and diagnosing vocal imbalance on the day.

Did you know?

- The diaphragm has no sensory feedback, in other words, you can't feel it.

- Higher-intensity singing (belting, etc.) requires less breath than speaking.

- Relaxation can cause some sounds to crack.

Recommended for:

Singers of all levels/styles, music/drama students, singing teachers, vocal coaches, acting/drama teachers, speech/voice therapists, producers/engineers.
This course is also particularly useful for previous course attendees who want to recap and refresh.

BELTING, YELLING AND SCREAMING - Advanced

This practical workshop looks at the high-intensity aspects of singing.  Belting, yelling, and screaming are perfectly natural primal sounds that all humans are capable of producing safely and efficiently.  Unfortunately we are often discouraged from making these noises because they have been branded "unhealthy, dangerous, rude and vulgar" by society, singing teachers, choir directors, etc.  Not only will participants reclaim their right to make loud noises in the workshop, they will also learn how to support them in the body, breath and vocal tract so they can be consistently reproduced.

Participants should be in good vocal health, have a basic understanding of vocal anatomy/physiology and good awareness of their body and technique to take part.

Did you know?
- Belting requires less breath than almost any other sound.
- Vocal distortion is created above the vocal folds, not on them.
- High-intensity singing doesn't necessarily mean taking "chest voice" higher.

Recommended for:
Pop/rock/theatre/gospel singers, singing teachers, vocal coaches, speech therapists

PRIMAL SOUND
- Emotion, Physiology and Sound - All Levels

Human beings are born able to make a variety of primal sounds (crying, screaming, etc.), which alert our carers to our needs.  These emotive noises are essential for survival.  Some research suggests that emotionally motivated noises, i.e. 'primal sounds' actually produce more efficient muscle coordination in the postural, respiratory and vocal mechanisms.

This workshop will explore how primal sounds (sigh, whimper, whinge/groan, yell, scream, etc.) can be used to access new vocal qualities and add emotional depth to performance.  All participants should have one piece of repertoire prepared to perform and be coached through.

Recomended for:
Singers, actors, music/drama/SLT students, singing teachers, vocal coaches, acting/voice teachers, speech/voice therapists
