THE 21st CENTURY SINGER - Stage 1 Technical Intensive

This intensive two-day course is an 'on-your-feet' practical exploration of the anatomy, physiology and mechanics of voice as they pertain to contemporary singers.  You'll break your voice down into 'bite-size' pieces and learn how to FIND, FEEL and HOLD each one to create new vocal sounds and effects.

The secrets to extending range, increasing power, stabilising 'registers', mastering breath and building stamina are simple and well-researched.  Solutions should be found in minutes and hours, not months and years.  An evidence-based approach to voice training can dramatically reduce the time it takes to gain control and subtlety over the most advanced vocal maneuvers.

We consolidate each day's content with an open-mic performance session where participants receive hands-on coaching. These sessions always prove very popular and space is extremely limited.

Recommended for:

Singers of all levels/styles, music/drama students, singing teachers, vocal coaches, acting/drama teachers, speech/voice therapists, producers/engineers

Presented by:
Dane Chalfin - Vocal Coach/Clinic Voice and Singing Consultant
and guests

Details: 14 hours training over two days

THE 21st CENTURY SINGER - Stage 2 Advanced Voice Maneuvers

Info to follow...

SURVIVING AS A ROCK SINGER

Explore the sounds and stylistic vocal effects used in rock singing, from belting to screaming to growling and everything in between.  Traditional teaching often brands hard, edgy, raspy rock singing as "vulgar, dangerous, bad technique" etc.  Though some of these sounds will present vocal health issues, they should NOT be immediately dismissed!

You will look at how these often controversial sounds can be produced more safely to ensure you have a solid way of using your voice with the absolute minimum amount of wear and tear on the vocal folds without changing your signature sounds.  You will also learn how to look after your voice in the studio, on tour and before/after gigs.

Recommended for:

Rock/Indie/Metal/Gospel/Pop singers, music students, singing teachers, vocal coaches, speech/voice therapists, producers/engineers

Presented by:
Dane Chalfin - Vocal Coach/Clinic Voice and Singing Consultant
and guests

Details: 7 hours training on one day

BELTING AND HIGH-INTENSITY SINGING

Belting is a controversial and often misunderstood voice quality. Explore what Belt is (natural, safe, a unique voice setup) and what it is not (‘bad technique’, ‘dangerous’, ‘the same as “chest” voice’). Whether you need to find your Belt voice, extend your Belt range, or learn how to teach Belt, this day will give you the tools to keep this quality healthy.

Belting is featured in most styles of music from Pop to Theatre to Gospel and even Opera.  Belt is the most exciting sound the human body makes, though it only has maximum impact if used sparingly and around other less intense sounds.  Belting also has interesting applications in voice therapy, which makes this course not only ideal for singers and actors, but for speech therapists as well.

Recommended for:
Contemporary singers, actors, music/drama students, singing teachers, vocal coaches, acting/voice teachers, speech/voice therapists, producers/engineers

Dane Chalfin - Vocal Coach/Clinic Voice and Singing Consultant

VOCAL M.O.T. - ANATOMY, PHYSIOLOGY AND VOCAL HEALTH

Explore the key structures of the larynx, vocal tract and breathing apparatus. Take a practical look at how you can isolate these structures and use them in combination to create different aesthetic sounds.  You will see 'in-camera' demonstrations of the larynx in action.  You'll learn about looking after your larynx, vocal health and hygiene, and get some up close and personal (and sometimes gruesome) images of voice in trouble.

This course is a MUST for singing teachers, vocal coaches and voice/drama teachers.  Students and professional voice-users also benefit tremendously from sound, evidence-based medical advice on the vocal health and technique myths that run rampant in the world of voice study and how to avoid them.

Recomended for:
Singers, actors, music/drama/SLT students, singing teachers, vocal coaches, acting/voice teachers, speech/voice therapists

Presented by:
Sue Jones - Head of Speech and Language Therapy, Wythenshawe Hospital
Dane Chalfin - Vocal Coach/Clinic Voice and Singing Consultant

Details: 7 hours training on one day with one of the most experienced voice rehabilitation teams in the UK

THE SINGING ACTOR - Music Theatre Intensive

Music theatre demands that actors are able to sustain the whole spectrum of human sound from projected speech to light classical singing to belting and screaming.  Not only must an actor be able to do this safely and sustainably, but also convincingly.

This intensive training day gives you a method to bring your text, mind, body and voice into unison so that every aspect of your instrument is performing cohesively.  You will learn text analysis, vocal technique, body work and acting strategies that work harmoniously to create honest, motivated and physically engaged performance through song.

Recommended for:
Professional/student actors, music/drama students

Mark Hudson - Manchester School of Acting/Leading Industry Acting Coach
Dane Chalfin - Vocal Coach/Clinic Voice and Singing Consultant

Details: 7 hours training on one day with two leading industry coaches

REHABILITATING  INJURED CONTEMPORARY SINGERS - INSET for Hospitals/Clinics

Traditional voice therapy tools can sometimes compromise a pop/rock/theatre singer's ability to make necessary stylistic sounds.  This INSET course looks at the aesthetic requirements placed up contemporary singers, how these sounds are produced, and how therapy can be tailored to the specific needs of these singers.

You will explore alternatives to 'yawn/sigh', extrinsic body support options, innovative ways of using yelling/belting in therapy, and the budding research behind safe screaming/distortions.

This INSET is available over one or two days.  The course is highly practical and there are plenty of opportunities to use the tools and experiment on yourself and other participants.

Dane Chalfin - Vocal Coach/Clinic Voice and Singing Consultant

Details:
8 or 16 hours training over one or two days respectively.

DYNAMIC SPEAKING

It's not just singers who suffer from vocal strain and fatigue. Professionals who rely on their voices for a living (teachers, lecturers, business people, tour guides, sports coaches etc.) often find themselves struggling to cope with their vocal workloads.  The good news is that by applying some simple mechanical principles we can increase projection, develop clarity and maximize our vocal stamina.

You will learn research-based approaches to dynamic posture, core stability, efficient breathing, projection, increasing range and vocal colour in this very interactive, practical course.
